When starting a blog...

Firstly, let me thank all those who contributed to the huge traffic associated with my previous post. That post generated over 200 page visits in less than 3 days, 6 new followers and a total of 32 comments(on other posts as well). An all time high for my blog, till date. ;)
Also after that post many of my friends started asking for tips when starting a blog. So I decided to write down aaalllllll my experiments which I've tried on my blog.

  1. Think up a nice theme 4 ur blog-Blogs with themes tend to attract more crowd than those without any specific purpose. Preferably choose something within ur interest and proficiency so that people would want to read ur content. Ranjeet's, Divye's, Ankur's and Anurag's blog are the best examples of what u'll see in the blog roll. Lemme try n give a few suggestions.....
    • Movie review blogs-Someone plz create such a blog! My request!!!
    • Photograph blogs-With minimal content of course, describing some happening events.
    • Technical blogs-Maybe computers or something related to ur own field
    • Puzzle blog-This mite be tough, though!
    • Personal blog-Something just for ur friends, the theme is YOU!
  2. Choose a suitable and conveniently available address-The 2 most popular sites which give u blogging domains for free are Blogger and Wordpress. Most blogs in the blog roll are under the Blogger domain. Abhishek's blog is under the Wordpress domain.
  3. Choose a fitting theme-Choose something plain n professional looking if ur blog content if technical, Cool n funky themes go well with personal n photograph blogs. Now u may be led to believe that blogger and wordpress do not offer enough themes. Well the solution to that would be to google 'blogger themes' (or wordpress) and download the xml file of the theme of ur choice. U'll definitely get something to satisfy u. Upload the xml file to ur blog and make the neccesary code changes.
Now for the optional stuff.... but the more interesting ones.
  1. Google Adsense-This feature of Google allows u to earn while blogging. Once u subscribe to adsense u will be asked the type of ad u wish to post on ur blog and its location. Based on that, u will be given a code to paste in ur blog. Henceforth, whenever people click on the ads, u will be paid. Wonderful as it may sound, it does not generate much revenue and I would reccomend not using it if it spoils ur blog's look. U r paid only if ur revenue crosses $100 (and so far I have earned only 34¢ coz none of u click on the ads :P). U can also monitor the amount of traffic visiting ur blog (apprx) and on which day.
  2. Google Analytics-Now this is something useful if u want to monitor some finer details of ur blog traffic like where the people belong to, which browser was used, screen resolution, percentage of new visitors, average time spent on ur blog and lots more. However, u'll need to sign up for Adsense to avail this.
  3. Google Webmaster Tools-This is perhaps the most interesting piece of code I've added to my blog. Pasting this code allows Google bots (aka spiders) to keep information updated about ur blog. That also means ur blog would show up on Google's search results. Next time any of u forget my blog address just google this..."anitesh singh blog" (without quotes) :P. I shall soon be writing another blog on how to get ur blog in the top 10 results after I've done experimenting with that.
 Happy Blogging.
