Proxies-The Lifeline of the Class

Just as we attain puberty after a certain age, in a similar manner we develop an uncanny tendency of not attending classes for weird reasons-be it sleep deprivation, playing, dating..... (It's really endless!!!)
Well, I won't say that these matters are not important. Actually, I happen to recall famous lines for each of these reasons-

  • We should have at least 8 hours of sleep. (These lines were taught to us in primary education!)

  • All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. (Apparently, people other than Jack have the same problem.)

  • Love is life-and what is life without love!
So the reasons as to why a student is unable to attend classes seem pretty important. But if only the college management would go by the thought process of a student-all would be well. However, the reality is that every college imposes the dreaded 75% Attendance Rule and has termed "not attending classes" as bunking. Zeesh! What a horrible thing to do to make the leaders of tomorrow sound as cheap shots.
Well there clearly had to be retaliation against such an atrocity. Among the stronger techniques, mass bunking and sine die (well, it surely is a solution), the most important breach to the 75% Attendance Rule is the daily PROXY. What a noble concept that saves the lives of countless innocents on a daily basis. The origin of this concept is lost in the pages of stealth, deception, trickery and most importantly, friendship.

Definition-
PROXY (prok-see)
  1. The substitute of attendance when a future leader is unable to attend
  2. Ally or confederate relied upon to do so.

Reasons- Any of the aforementioned happenings in one's life or just plain disinterest in studies (most probably caused due to the monotony of the lecturer)

Techniques-

  1. The Stealth Method (aka The Submarine Method)-It is a very risk involving method but yet it is by far the most effective. Here, the ally marks an attendance and then obscures himself/herself from the eyes of the lecturer and resurfaces (like a submarine) when he/she is to mark the next attendance.
This method is especially effective in marking attendance for multiple allies whose roll numbers are separated by a certain gap. The largeness of this gap is directly proportional to the smartness of the student and also to the dumbness of the teacher.
This method is also dependent on various other factors such as positioning of the student (Corner benches are the most effective), height of the student sitting in front (The taller the better) and the anonymity of the student in the eyes of the teacher.

  1. The Yes Sir-Present Sir Technique-This method is employed for adjacent roll numbers so that both responses sound different and the risk of failure of operation is lessened.

  2. The Late Method-This is a team effort where the teacher is made to take the attendance for a second time for the latecomers of the class. In this case, a particular person is able to mark attendance once in the initial roll call and once again when the latecomers' attendance is called.
Attacks

Wonder what crime have we committed that the lecturers should develop counter measures for this simple thing. Looks like there will never ever be peace between the two races of teachers and students. Some of them are as follows-

  1. Row wise call-The teacher calls each student in a row wise manner.
  2. Student recognition-The teacher develops special senses of recognition for some students.

  3. Chit technique-The teacher lets the students write their roll numbers on a chit. Obviously, there are several proxies but here the catch is that all of them are adjacent-I mean, if u put your friend's proxy, it would be just next to your own roll no. Now, if the teacher happens to be one of the sinister types then he/she calls out all the roll nos in the same sequence. Thus, almost all proxies are caught.

Needless to say, there will be no rest until we remain in the war. The 75% Attendance War shall never end till the end of time. And as the teachers develop more and more sophisticated techniques, we shall let you know that there are cracks and hacks to every system!

Hail Proxies!
